What Agents Buy.

Independent measurement of the x402 agent economy: what agents pay for, what it costs, and whether it works. How this works.

I paid 15 APIs for the price of Bitcoin. The 8 that answered were all within 0.1% of the exchange. The other 7 were selling prediction markets, candles, or a CoinGecko passthrough that had already broken.

Accuracy turned out to be a non-issue. What varies is whether you get a spot price at all, and whether the thing behind the endpoint survives its own upstream.

There is no single true price for Bitcoin, so I did not grade these against another price API, which would just measure which vendors agree. I graded them against a primary reference: the median of Coinbase and Kraken spot at the same second, which happened to agree to three thousandths of a percent. Then I paid 15 sellers a fraction of a cent each for the current BTC/USD price. Eight returned a real spot price and every one landed within 0.12% of the exchange, most within 0.02%. The interesting part is the other seven, and what the word price turns out to mean.

What I sentto buy the current BTC/USD price from the cheapest sellers in the category and grade each against a primary reference, the median of live Coinbase and Kraken spot, rather than against another price API, because grading one vendor's price with another vendor's price is circular
reference: median(Coinbase, Kraken) BTC/USD spot at call time, ~$63,135 (they agreed to 0.003%)

returned a real spot price, all accurate:
  vibesprings.net $63,136 0 bps Coinbase
  keyronne.com $63,140 +1 bps CoinGecko
  crypto.apitoll.cloud $63,122 -2 bps CoinGecko
  proxy.suverse.io $63,122 -2 bps CoinGecko
  agents.ai-rook.com $63,122 -2 bps CoinGecko
  coingecko.use.x402... $63,147 +2 bps CoinGecko

  agentdatum.com $63,210 +12 bps Binance/USDT

did NOT return a spot price:
  x402.ottoai.services Polymarket prediction-market odds, not a price
  api.hyperextend.xyz 1-minute OHLC candles, not a spot
defi-signals.org 502, upstream CoinGecko returned 429 (rate limited)
  x402-defi-signals 502, same CoinGecko 429
  bazaar-gateway 402, payment double-submit
api.tickersfeed.net 404, our own input error, not counted against them
  api.agentfeeds.jp returned a different product
